CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Carrabassett Valley Academy (CVA) is proud to announce that Big Dogs Morgan Shute ’25 and Maggie Swain ’24 are one step closer to achieving their Olympic dreams. As the top two female FIS ski cross athletes in the United States, both have qualified for the prestigious FIS Ski Cross World Championships, set to take place later this month in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Shute, a senior at CVA from Allentown, NJ, currently holds the #1 ranking among U.S. female ski cross athletes. Swain, a 2024 CVA graduate and Carrabassett Valley native who calls Sugarloaf home, follows closely behind as the #2-ranked U.S. athlete. Their outstanding performances on the World Cup circuit this season have solidified their places among the sport’s elite.
“An 18-year-old, second-year FIS athlete qualifying for this prestigious event is a huge accomplishment,” said CVA Ski Cross Program Manager and Coach Michael Phelan. “For two to qualify from CVA is amazing. This is one of the biggest events in the sport.”
Ski cross is an adrenaline-fueled event where multiple skiers race head-to-head down a course filled with jumps, banked turns, and other challenging terrain features. The sport made its Olympic debut as a medal event in the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver-Whistler and continues to gain popularity worldwide.
Shute and Swain have been competing at the highest level throughout the season, delivering impressive results on the World Cup circuit. The FIS Ski Cross World Championships, scheduled for March 21-22, will feature both individual and team races. Fans can catch the action live at watch.fis-ski.com.
“Carrabassett Valley Academy takes great pride in supporting its student-athletes as they pursue excellence on and off the slopes,” stated CVA head of school, Alex Godomsky. “Shute and Swain’s achievements are a testament to their dedication, hard work, and the strength of CVA’s ski cross program.”
